After a 45-minute bus ride through the valleys and mountains of central Crete, we pass through the city of Rethymno and we continue to the starting point of out hike through the Mili Gorge. The walk is a family experience par excellence.

The valley of the mills has a special history. The Greek word Mylos means mill. When the Venetians ruled Crete in 1643, grain was ground in the Mili Gorge to supply the entire Rethymno region. The millers were mainly Muslims who were driven off the island in 1922/23. The Valley of the Mills was inhabited until 1972, after which the remaining population moved to the higher village of Mili. The path we follow goes past dilapidated mills and ruins, streams, caves and small rivers over lovely wooden bridges.

The enchanting flora and fauna provide enough shade to enjoy a hike even on hot days. In between, the streams can be used as Kneipp facilities to cool off warm feet or used as a mini refreshing whirlpool for relaxation. At the end of the hike, we will be rewarded at the Cantina Banana, a tavern that is like a jungle in the truest meaning of the word. There are delicious freshly roasted breads with tomatoes, avocado and sheep's cheese. Not to be missed is the chicory, avocado, pomegranate, hard cheese, walnut and honey salad. Afterwards we drive to Rethymno city where you have approx. 2 hours time for a visit to the
regional weekly market and a stroll through the Old Town. We return by bus to Plakias.
